Frequently Asked Questions
I want to know about…
Who can sign up?
All children from birth to 15 years old may be added to our database of study participants. Even an infant can reveal a lot about how we learn language and other cognitive skills!
How do I sign up?
Click here to visit our sign-up page. Fill in your name and contact information along with the ages and names of your children, and we’ll be in touch! All information is kept private.
Why sign up?
Hear from a number of different Northwestern child development labs about study opportunities for your children!
Study participation is fun! Kids enjoy “playing games” with our researchers. Participation gives families a chance to play a vital role in improving education and intervention programs
What happens once I sign up?
Northwestern child development labs in the Child Studies Group may contact you via phone or email with information about study opportunities your children are eligible for.
They will explain what participation involves, when appointments are available, and ask if you would like to participate in their study. Signing up for the registry does not commit you to anything—it just gives you a chance to hear about studies that might interest you.
What is the cost to join the registry?
Participation in the registry is completely free! There is no cost to you and you may leave the registry at any time.
Is there compensation for joining the registry?
You will not be paid for choosing to be a part of the registry. Individual study sessions often compensate with money or a gift.
What happens at a study session?
In general, our studies involve simple activities (often referred to as “games”) that kids engage in with a researcher. Activities can include:
- Playing with toys
- Looking at pictures or short videos
- Storytelling
- Learning new words
- Playing a computer game
You will be with your child the entire time.
How long does a study session take?
A single session typically lasts about an hour—we want to allow plenty of time to answer any questions you may have, and for you and your child to get comfortable in the space!
When and where do study sessions take place?
Sessions are conveniently located on the Northwestern University Evanston campus and scheduled at your convenience. Parking is free.
Can I bring a sibling?
Siblings are always welcome! We’ll have a study staff member available to play and help out during the appointment.
